Teaming up with UNFPA for training alternative birthing positions in India

While traditional birthing positions like supine or semi-reclining are in widespread use, the benefits of giving birth in alternative birthing positions include improving maternal outcomes, reducing morbidity, and promoting respectful care.

The Alternate Birthing Position (ABP) module is intended to transform childbirth practices by introducing healthcare professionals to supporting alternative birthing positions, such as squatting, standing, and side-lying.

Developed by UNFPA with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for inclusion in government training programs, the ABP module has been piloted and validated by the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and South Asia Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (SAFOG), and National Health Mission, Madhya Pradesh.

Laerdal Global Health helped facilitate a two-day ABP workshop which provided obstetricians and gynecologists with in-depth training and hands-on exercises. Participants learned techniques for using props, strategies for preparation, and gained insights into how these methods can be implemented in both government and private healthcare settings.

The workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with 87% of participants rating it as "Excellent" and 67% finding the training highly relevant to their practice. Participants also reported a 13% improvement in knowledge following the sessions and increased confidence in supporting alternative birthing positions.

Live demonstrations, including side-lying and sitting births, allowed participants to observe these positions in action and practice using a Learner’s Manual to train others. The success of the workshop underscores the importance of enhancing maternity care and empowering healthcare professionals to implement new techniques ultimately contributing to healthier outcomes for mothers and babies in their communities.
