Laerdal and partners shape future of midwifery education

Strengthening midwifery education is essential for midwives to deliver high-quality care for women, newborns, and their families.

The world is facing a severe and urgent shortage of midwives. According to the United Nations, more than one million additional midwives are needed by 2035 which represents more than a third of the required global midwifery workforce. Strengthening midwifery education is essential for midwives to deliver high-quality care for women, newborns, and their families.

Women’s access to a well-educated and competent midwife is a global challenge and a concern to all countries. Therefore, the Alliance for Improved Midwifery Education (AIME) was developed in 2021 by United Nations agencies and the International Confederation of Midwives. Laerdal was invited to address the critical need of scaling up and improving midwifery education globally. Laerdal is a strong supporter and member in the AIME Steering Committee, with regular meetings and updates.

Organized by UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO, ICM, and Laerdal, AIME ran the first regional workshop in November 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya, where the ICM and Laerdal together showcased the first version of the Peer-to-peer practice tool, based on the ICM competencies and SimCapture for Skills.

In March, the second regional workshop took place in Bangkok. Educators from 19 countries from the Asia- Pacific region were introduced to new educational resources and programs to enhance the quality of midwifery teaching for improved sexual reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child-adolescent health services.

AIME is the first global collaboration focusing on improving midwifery education, from which you will hear more as we go forward – towards a world where midwives can save so many more lives. Partnership and collaboration are key for AIME to succeed.
