Expanding reach, increasing impact

Over 30 countries added to list of those eligible for our not-for-profit pricing, to help reduce deaths from time-critical emergencies.

In line with our mission to help save a million lives, every year, we have expanded our list of countries eligible for not-for-profit pricing, adding 31 to the existing list of 86.

The decision follows a year of close collaboration with the World Health Organization to understand and address the challenges of deaths from time-critical emergencies. Globally, 50% of all deaths are a result of time-critical emergency medical conditions. The burden of death and disability impacts low- and middle-income countries most. Access to, and the affordability of, hands-on training for healthcare workers have proved to be some of the key challenges.

To respond to this challenge Laerdal has collaborated to create and pilot test a hybrid version of the Basic Emergency Care course. We have also worked to develop the Emergency Care Learning Lab: a highly portable, durable and affordable extensive training kit that complements the skills requirements and learning objectives of basic emergency care programs.

We are driven by our mission to help save lives, and are well-positioned at Laerdal Global Health – with our existing work in the maternal and newborn sector in low- and middle-income countries – to expand into time-critical emergencies. We know that empowered and confident health workers can save lives – whether on a maternity ward or in an emergency care setting. Becoming confident requires regular, hands-on training opportunities, so the expansion of this list will ensure many more health workers have access to those vital opportunities.

The expansion of the eligible list of countries means that 31 additional nations can procure the Emergency Care Learning Lab and other Laerdal Global Health solutions at affordable prices. The additional countries were selected based on a published report, outlining the burden of emergency medical diseases. The countries were identified as having a high number of years of life lost to premature mortality and years of healthy life lost due to disability (DALYs) resulting from emergency medicine diseases. Examples of countries included in the list are Egypt, Ukraine, Lebanon and Syria.
