Can we do more together to help save lives on the day of birth?

With 2025 now on the horizon, we are reminded of the critical maternal and child health targets set in SDG 3. In just over 5 years, these targets are meant to be met. With many countries off-track, we need to come together to accelerate progress.

What has become clear is that strengthening and expanding partnerships allows for impact at scale and impact that sustains. We’re taking stock to reflect on collaboration and to explore how we can work more closely with existing partners, aligned organizations and programs to catalyze impact, further.

A concrete example of the power of collaboration is the recent launch of the updated, more user friendly online home of the Helping Mothers and Babies Survive training programs and educational materials. We are proud to be a partner in this initiative, increasing access to these resources, as a global good.

Solution in the Spotlight

NeoNatalie Live

NeoNatalie Live is a smart manikin that enables frequent newborn resuscitation training. It simulates various scenarios, drawing on more than 1000 actual recorded newborn resuscitation cases, whilst providing objective performance feedback and identifying areas for improvement. Through individual and group trainings, this simulator helps build and retain healthcare providers’ competencies in managing birth asphyxia – a leading cause of neonatal mortality.

NeoNatalie Live is an invaluable tool for training birth attendants in neonatal resuscitation. It has realistic simulations and a user-friendly interface. Practitioners have a safe, hands-on environment to hone their skills, ensuring they are well-prepared to handle critical situations.

Globally, over 300,000 unique training sessions have taken place with NeoNatalie Live, reaching over 13,000 healthcare personnel.

A key benefit of NeoNatalie Live is that the scenarios available in the app are aligned with the WHO Essential Newborn Care Course: a course that transforms vital global standards into quality care for newborns.

NeoNatalie Live is also one of the innovations included in the Safer Births Bundle of Care program, implemented in 150+ health facilities in Tanzania.

Impact Update: Buy One, Gift One

Partnership aims to improve access to safe surgery for mothers and newborns on the day of birth

In partnership with the World Federation of Societies for Anaesthesiologists, we called for applications to receive MamaBirthie CS simulators. We received 65 applications from projects and programs globally. Judges deliberated over applications, considering where these birthing and safe c-section simulators could make the most impact on helping to save lives.

27 winners were selected in July, which will result in 350 MamaBirthie CS units making their way to 15 countries to better equip healthcare personnel to respond to obstetric emergencies. This partnership and the distribution of simulators was possible thanks to the Buy One, Gift One program.
