Tanzania team represent LGH at the country’s first International Primary Health Care Conference
In late March 2024 our Tanzania team attended the International Primary Healthcare Conference in the country's capital, Dodoma. As the first of its kind in Tanzania, it marked an important moment in the journey to implement universal health coverage, which is set to leverage primary healthcare as a vehicle for achieving this.
The conference was attended by over 1000 people, including government representatives, researchers and other implementing partners. The aim of the conference was to share experiences and best practice from the field, alongside evidence, to inform and develop policy as part of the Primary Health Care agenda which is under development.
Laerdal Global Health’s Dorice Twende, Midwifery Technical Officer and Grace Qorro, Implementation Manager attended the conference, showcasing solutions at the booth. The team were also part of two abstract presentations, including one which was presented by a member of the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, Mr. Nassanias Shango – a coordinator from the Training Department. This presentation focused on simulation as a teaching methodology as stipulated in the National Guideline for skills laboratory management, which adopts simulation-based learning as a pedagogical way to facilitate learning.
It was great to be a part of this conference and to be surrounded by many individuals who are passionate about improving the quality of care people receive in Tanzania. We know from our experiences in the field – including as part of the Safer Births Bundle of Care program - that improving the skills of health personnel can help save lives. It is exciting that the Ministry of Health shares enthusiasm for this approach.
The conference was also attended by the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon Ditto Biteko who represented the president.
