Major Achievements of the Survive & Thrive Alliance
A 5-Year Report Guiding the Way Forward
The Survive & Thrive Global Development Alliance (GDA) is a public-private partnership established in 2012 to improve maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) outcomes through clinical training, systems strengthening and policy advocacy. The alliance supports and sustains high quality facilitybased interventions and clinical competencies through training and quality-improvement approaches and effective technologies and innovations. Additionally, they mobilize and equip national professional associations to improve the quality of high-impact MNCH interventions in health facilities.
This 5-year report details the accomplishments of Survive & Thrive from 2012-2017
Key Achievements
- Developed an evidence-based transformative training methodology for maternal and newborn care
- Demonstrated that quality improvement approaches are essential to sustain quality care
- Transformed the global landscape for basic newborn resuscitation
- Increased access to lifesaving resuscitation and training equipment
- Integrated Helping Babies Survive and Helping Mothers Survive into 30 national programs
- Demonstrated that strong professional associations are a pathway to Sustainability
- Mobilized $120M in contributions from all partners, 45% of which was cash
- 65 peer reviewed papers have been published on the programs, several studies showing significant (47%-62% ) reduction in early newborn mortality
