Helping Mothers Survive

Through a unique partnership between Jhpiego, a world leader in competency-based clinical learning and quality improvement, and Laerdal Global Health, the Helping Mothers Survive Secretariat was established in 2014 to create a paradigm shift for building capacity of all health workers who care for women and newborns on the day of birth and beyond. The Helping Mothers Survive (HMS) suite of training programs provides health workers with skills in prevention, detection and management of the leading causes of maternal deaths including bleeding after birth and pre-eclampsia & eclampsia. Upcoming modules include training in normal labor & birth, and complications of labor & birth.

Since 2014, 65 countries have implemented HMS programs and a documented 86,000 providers have been trained.

Helping Mothers Survive has been reviewed and endorsed by the global professional organizations for midwives (ICM), gynecologists and obstetricians (FIGO), pediatricians (AAP), nurses (ICM), and UNFPA.
