In Eastern and Southern Africa, mortality rates for mothers and newborns are among the highest in the world. To address this, competent and compassionate healthcare providers are essential.

A recent UN Report estimates that globally 4.5 million mothers and babies die every year. Tanzania bears 2% of this burden which amounts to 94,000 lives — mostly from preventable or treatable causes, if adequate care was available. One way to address this problem is to develop competent, confident, and skilled health personnel.

Hosted at the Laerdal headquarters in Stavanger, Norway, by Laerdal’s Strategic Research team, the 1st International Expert Meeting for Safer Births and Liveborn research gathered more than 40 international experts to address global challenges related to maternal and newborn mortality and discuss opportunities for collaboration, product development, and new research.
