A digital tool to measure, monitor and improve trainings in low-resource settings launches

LIFT Assessments is a brand-new digital tool from Laerdal Global Health that promises to help facilitators assess smarter and achieve more with their training sessions.

Addressing the time consuming, manual scoring processes that many trainers use when delivering sessions, this tool gives rapid, real-time insights into training data, allowing facilitators to evaluate individual or group performance. This means the learning experience can be better-adapted to suit the needs of participants.

The tool also enables learners to track their own progress, over time – a unique feature that is hoped will both motivate individuals engaged in on-going training and help to reinforce skills.

With a focus on helping to save lives in countries with high levels of maternal and neonatal mortality, Laerdal Global Health has specially designed this digital tool to work in areas with limited bandwidth and internet access, including remote locations.

LIFT Assessments is designed to enable quality improvement, and is focussed on supporting capacity building of healthcare providers, in turn strengthening healthcare systems.

CEO of Laerdal Global Health, Karoline Myklebust Linde, says: “We are always working to develop solutions that help to save lives. With the contribution LIFT Assessments can make to improving learning outcomes for healthcare workers participating in trainings, we are excited about the impact of this tool. We know it can reduce the risk of knowledge or skills gaps – as these will be evident to the trainer during trainings. This is vital because to improve clinical practice, misunderstandings are best addressed in the moment, during trainings.

We also know this tool can be easily scaled, allowing implementors to get insights from wide-ranging trainings in multiple locations. This can inform targeted interventions for facilities or even whole regions.”

LIFT Assessments has been tested in a number of settings, including in projects in Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ethiopia and as part of the Safer Births Bundle of Care program in Tanzania.

We used the LIFT Assessments platform during the Essential Newborn Care (ENC) training across six regional referral hospitals in Tanzania. The tool was invaluable for conducting knowledge checks and OSCE assessments, enabling us to track participants' progress efficiently. It greatly enhanced the quality and precision of our evaluations, ultimately contributing to better training outcomes.
