Campaign launched to improve access to simulation training for the prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage

ICM (International Confederation of Midwives) and Laerdal Global Health have launched an initiative at the ICM Regional Conference Kigali 2024, inviting midwives’ associations who are ICM members to submit project proposals to receive MamaNatalie simulators.

MamaNatalie is a simulator that helps prepare midwives and other healthcare personnel to manage birth complications like postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), alongside the Helping Mothers Survive (HMS) Bleeding After Birth Complete learning materials.

The campaign aims to support ICM member associations in countries with a high burden of maternal mortality, to grow, strengthen and to promote continuity of midwife care.

Women dying during childbirth from preventable causes like postpartum haemorrhage is a tragedy for every family and community. We know this issue disproportionately affects women in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia but we also know that simulation based training can help build midwives’ capacity and competency to better identify, prevent and manage PPH. That’s why we are pleased to invite our midwives associations in countries affected by high rates of maternal mortality, to apply for these simulators and accompanying educational materials – which will be distributed free of cost.

Applications open on September 23, 2024 until November 15, 2024. Projects will be evaluated and shortlisted based on their project goals, objectives, sustainability, impact potential, partnerships and requirements.

The distribution of the MamaNatalie simulators and Helping Mothers Survive Bleeding After Birth Complete learning materials is possible due to the Laerdal Buy One Gift One Program. For each birthing simulator purchased through Laerdal Medical for use in high-income countries, a second one is donated to support the Helping Mothers Survive initiative in low-resource settings.
