HMBS.org Unveils Update
Streamlined Access to Programs on Helping Mothers and Babies Survive
Hmbs.org, the home of Helping Mothers and Babies Survive (HMBS), announces an update to improve access to its free educational programs and materials which support healthcare providers’ competency in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. The update, which allows users to more easily find, view, and download resources, will make it simpler than ever to facilitate quality training for those managing births, wherever they are in the world.
At present many countries are not on track to meet the aims of Sustainable Development Goal 3.1 and 3.2, with a particularly worrying stagnation in reducing maternal mortality. Most causes of both maternal and neonatal mortality are preventable. That is why as a global good – and in a bid to support countries to meet these important goals – the HMBS programs and educational materials are available via the recently updated hmbs.org.
We are committed to equipping healthcare workers with the skills necessary to provide life-saving care during pregnancy and birth, thereby making strides towards a future where every mother and baby has the chance to thrive.

What is HMBS?
HMBS stands for Helping Mothers and Babies Survive. The HMBS training programs take a hands-on, team-oriented and facility-based approach to learning that is aligned with WHO recommendations. The programs, which target the most common causes of maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity have been developed by multiple organizations. The newborn programs are developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with American Academy of Pediatrics, with support from Laerdal Global Health. The maternal programs are developed by Jhpiego, in collaboration with the International Confederation of Midwives, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, UNFPA, the International Council of Nurses, with support from Laerdal Global Health.
Updates Unveiled
The recent web updates to hmbs.org mean that training facilitators can more efficiently find the right information and resources to deliver training. This is thanks to an updated resource search function, making it possible to navigate the vast array of materials and view or download what is required quickly and easily. Materials include over 100 videos, as well as action plans, flip charts, simulation practice cards, assessments and more.
Other updates include improved usability focused on making the site intuitive to navigate; a contact form to allow for increased support to those using the platform; and an increased number of translated materials, with French and Spanish resources now available for most training programs.
We are proud of our longstanding relationships with the collaborating organizations on this website and of the ability to provide these resources as a global good. Having the diverse resources available and discoverable in one place provides flexibility, ensuring the programs can be delivered whatever the setting – some can even be delivered in a blended format with remote facilitation.
Hmbs.org also houses important implementation resources, including guidance on the planning of a project and recommendations of tools and services that can enhance the impact of implementations.
We know the HMBS programs can help to save lives and we are optimistic about this updated version of the platform reaching more people, for more impact – particularly where it is needed most.
