HMS Pre-eclampsia & Eclampsia

A evidence-based training program by Jhpiego based on the latest WHO guidelines to teach birth attendants the lifesaving skills on how to manage and control pre-eclampsia & eclampsia, the second leading cause of maternal deaths.


Helping Mothers Survive Pre-eclampsia & Eclampsia (HMS PE&E) is part of the evidence-based suite of training programs called Helping Mothers Survive

The HMS PE&E curriculum includes:

  • Two Action Plan Wall Posters: 'Initial Care' and 'Advanced Care'
  • Facilitator Flip Chart
  • Provider Guides
  • MgSO4 Checklist/Monitoring A4 Sheet
  • Medication Table A3 Poster

The materials are currently available in English with both Internationa/Asian and African graphics.

The HMS PE&E training covers:

  • Communication and teamwork
  • Correct assessment and classification of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy
  • Administration of loading and maintenance doses of magnesium sulphate
  • Antihypertensive medications, and management of convulsions

If you want to hold an HMS PE&E training, you need the HMS PE&E curriculum and the following:

HMS PE&E is designed to be delivered at the jobsite. The first day can be used to train all team members who interact with pregnant, labouring, and post-partum women who need to diagnose and treat rapidly. The second day is intended for skilled birth attendants to enhance their ability for ongoing management of the pre-eclamptic or eclamptic woman.
